Well it's nice to have the guys back in town. Tom has been teaching in WA and Ev and Swarts have been touring as usual, now they're home in Sydney and ready to get back to their jazz roots. These guys have been making waves round town with this relatively new trio. After playing Jazzgroove, Wangaratta and a bunch of gigs they now head to 505 dishing up originals and putting their own spin on rock songs, everything from Madonna to Foo Fighters, nothing's sacred!
So head on down for something a bit different yet strangely familiar from three of our favorites.

Thursday 2 September- 505 Latin Night- Sonido
‘Sonido de los Andes’ was formed in Sydney in 1977 and quickly became an integral part of the Australian music community. Led by Oscar Marin, the band was one of the first professional Australian ensembles dedicated to performing folkloric music from the Andes and South America. Over the years, the ensemble expanded its musical boundaries incorporating other Latin American and non Latin American styles such as jazz and world music. This evolution became ‘Sonido’.
From the haunting sounds of the Andes to the rich rhythms and melodies of Cuba, Venezuela, Colombia and Mexico, Sonido has embraced all of Latin America as one. The ensemble features an exotic array of folkloric instruments such as the Charango, Zampona, Quena, Tumbadoras, Cajon, Harp, Cuatro, Tiple and Guitar mixed with contemporary instruments such as the drum kit, keyboards and acoustic bass. Known for their open-minded musical approach, Sonido continues to explore the indigenous cultures of Latin America and beyond.
They are regarded as one of the top exponents of Latin American music, constantly invited to major festivals and events around the world and now they head to 505.
Cesar Marin- charango, cuatro, guitar, tiple, vihuela, bass, quena, zampona, bombo, cajon, guitarron, percussion, vocals.

Monday 6 September- Adam Miller
A blend of precision and raw emotion Adam Miller interweaves percussive rhythms, complex bass lines and intricate melodies all played simultaneously on the one guitar! It is this talent that has seen him perform with guitar innovator and inventor Les Paul in New York City, the 'Certified Guitar Player' Tommy Emmanuel across Australia and the USA, and trade licks with jazz guitarist Charlie Hunter. Miller won the 2002 Australian Fingerstyle Guitar Competition, and has performed at major Australian festivals including A Day On The Green, Jazz In The Vines, and the Adelaide International Guitar Festival.
Late 2008 sees the release of Adam Miller's 'Out Of My Hands', an album recorded primarily live in the studio. Miller's polyphonic acoustic guitar parts weave between the electric bass (Peter Gray) and drums (Nic Cecire) to create a sound that seems impossible for just three people. The grooves and intensity of playing are completely unexpected from an acoustic guitar. "I love that with an acoustic guitar, what you put in is what you get out. And without the distractions of amplification and effects I found I could concentrate more on the music I was making."
Adam Miller's songs are bluesy, soulful, and heartfelt, drawing influence from guitar greats Robben Ford, Larry Carlton, Charlie Hunter, John Scofield, Eric Clapton, Tommy Emmanuel, Martin Taylor, Bill Frissell, and superb contemporary songwriters like John Mayer, Dave Matthews, Ben Folds, Fiona Apple, Damien Rice, and Eagle-Eye Cherry.

This was the second performance I’d heard of this band, and it was even more
sensational than the first. Each of these musicians might well be called great in
a local context, and if we were not so many flying hours away from everything,
they would be considered very significant internationally. –John Clare-sima website
Thursday 16 September - MdeCL Live with Special Guests (USA)
$20/15

505 is thrilled to welcome back to OZ NZ born LA based musician and composer, and dear friend of ours, Mark de Clive-Lowe (MdCL) for his Sydney leg of a world tour. Those of you who caught him last time he played 505 will know what I'm talking about, for those who didn't make sure you get in super early cos this is a rare opportunity, and one you don't want to miss!
“…the man behind a million great tunes” – Gilles Peterson/Radio 1 Worldwide (UK)
“A Herbie Hancock for the new millennium” - Montreal Jazz Festival (Canada)
“Call it what you want, I’m sticking with the words awesome and genius” – Wax Magazine (UK)
“…the illest dude I have seen live” – Karizma (US)
MdCL is one of the most innovative producers and live performers you will find anywhere.
Whether you call him artist, producer, composer, pianist, performer, DJ, or selecta, titles are impartial to the marvel of Mark de Clive-Lowe (MdCL). Many try to classify this impressively fertile music journey, yet to identify with only one label belies the heavy scope of the ride. The piano set the course, the keyboard is the vehicle, and with the drum machine as the fuel, the relentless skill of MdCL is underscored by a rare sonic sensibility. He’s an accomplished musician, originally sewing his oats in straight-ahead jazz, before taking the music far beyond. Anchored by the duality of his Japanese and New Zealander parentage and ignited by a love of playing piano at the age of four, it is no wonder this multi-national phenom has seen his explosive natural gifts blaze across the globe from NZ to the US, UK, Europe, Asia and Cuba.
A devastating live performer, the MdCL experience is marked by impromptu studio production created on stage from scratch, using drum machines, keyboards and effects. The end result: live remixes birthed on stage for each and every gig. With bold chops like this, to call him “prolific” is an understatement, having contributed to over 250 releases and being a first-call collaborator for a wide range of artists, including Jill Scott, Jody Watley, Leon Ware (Marvin Gaye/Michael Jackson/Maxwell), Dame Shirley Bassey, Sandra St. Victor (The Family Stand/Chaka Khan), amongst a slew of others.
Currently based in LA after a decade entrenched in London, MdCL has cemented his reputation as the go-to man for anyone wanting his unique take on club music, progressive soul and urban alternative: a revolutionary Quincy Jones for a new generation, armed with the ability to meld the science of beat-making with the fluidity of composed music.
MdCL’s potential is beyond convention. He’s one who can take it all on the road like no one else, with a solid fan base that bridges cities as far reaching as LA, NYC, Atlanta, London, Paris, Amsterdam, Barcelona, Tokyo and Sydney.
Friday 17 September - The Rescue Ships

Venue 505- cnr Perry and Cleveland Streets Surry Hills
venue505.com
There have been many musical duos in the past Sonny & Cher, Tina & Ike, Johny Cash & June Carter but we like this one the best. This beautiful combination of local vocalists Elana Stone and Brian Campeau has an air of magic about it. So wonderfully suited to each other yet so remarkably different this duo are able to weave a stories that leave you spell bound.
Celebrated for his powerful voice, unique instrumentation, unusual arrangements and organic, left field production, Brian Campeau is no regular singer songwriter. He's trying something a little different, and succeeding brilliantly at it. Combined with the heavy hitting Joplin-esque jazz/soul vocalist Stone these two work brilliantly together and are an absolute must see.
Saturday 18 September - Sun Chasers

Eden Ottignon – bass
Mathew Ottignon – sax
Mick Stuart – 14 piece kalimba table
Aaron O’Neil – guitar
Alon Ilsar – drums
At the Peats Ridge Festival in 2008, Sun Chasers’ bassist, Eden Ottignon built a mobile, solar powered generator to power a band. Solar panels soak up the rays and feed power to the musicians. This allows the band to make any public space, such as parks and footpaths into live music venues, providing a sustainable alternative way for all members of society to enjoy live music.
This freedom also radiates throughout the music, creating a part-improvised mix of groove-based original music, covering many styles such as: Roots Reggae, Ethiopian, Afro Cuban, Afrobeat, Gypsy, Jazz and Soul. This music is complimented by six of Sydney’s great musicians including, part-time inventor, Mick Stuart, who has built his own instrument: the Polymba. This is a 15 piece African-style electronic Kalimba table with over 130 metal prongs which Mick plays effortlessly with his fingers - creating a multitude of new sounds and grooves.
This year, The Sun Chasers performed in Hyde Park for the 2010 Sydney Festival ‘First Night’ celebrations, in front of a massive crowd in the afternoon sun. Following this they christened the Spiegel Garden outdoor gazebo – a resounding success. Recently they have played to packed houses at Fringe Bar in Paddington, and the new artist run venue, ‘505’ in Surry Hills. This will be the location of their upcoming show for Sydney’s first Fringe Festival on the 18th of September.
